MOTOR EFFICIENCY vs WINDING EFFICIENCY

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

We all know what the efficiency of an electric motor is and how to calculate it (BTW, this reading is not intended for those who do not know).

A few questions:

- What is actually the efficiency of the winding?

- How to calculate its value?

- What is the meaning of such value?

- How to improve the winding?

Would you like to know more about it?

Intro

The efficiency of a three-phase motor is complex and depends on several factors, including the design of

the stator and rotor, the quality of the materials used, the manufacturing process, the cooling system,

the control system and the winding configuration. Factors such as the basic winding factor, the

differential leakage coefficient, fill factor are important characteristics of the winding configuration

that affect the efficiency of the motor.

As for the winding alone, the two most important features that characterize a particular three-phase

winding (connection diagram) are:

- the basic winding factor and

- the differential leakage coefficient....
