6, 12, 18 Pole Windings

The six-pole windings in the core of 24, 30, 42, 48, 60 etc slots, are often used in:

- single-speed or

- multi-speed windings (as a separate winding). Due to their nature, they will always cause an unbalanced currents with all the side effects (overheating, power derating, less efficiency, etc). When selecting this type of winding, the such design should be chosen that the side effects are minimized. For some reason, producers often choose the easiest and the worst version. In the photos below , the manufacturer has created a winding ( 24 slots, 6 pole) with nearly the worst possible single-layer winding ( so far, we have identified only one winding that is worse than this). Usually, the blame is on the rewind shop if the motor has come back to repair very soon despite the fact that the new winding is just repeated genuine winding. The same above mentioned is related also to the:

- 12 pole motors with No. slots * 2 (ie. 48, 60, 84, 120 etc) as well as

- 18 pole motor with No. of slots * 3 (ie. 72, 90, 126 etc). In all these cases, we recommend the analysis and redesign (if necessary). You can get our support in selecting the most suitable winding design for particular application. Of course, you have to be able to deliver the old winding data and, if necessary, measures of the core and slot, also.
